Chapter 979: Battle of Taiyuan (20). [983]

Summary

Several soldiers bring four sheepskin rafts to Zhang Xuan, who learns that only five hundred out of one thousand camels carry these rafts. Fang Xuan Ling assesses the rafts and concludes they cannot safely cross the turbulent Yellow River. Zhang Xuan realizes Chuluo Khan is not trying to escape but is luring the Sui army into open battle. With this intelligence, Zhang Xuan decides to shift the battlefield back to Loufan County and orders a retreat. Meanwhile, Chuluo Khan, puzzled by the Sui army's sudden retreat, suspects something is amiss. He consults his strategist, Kang Su Mi, who suggests that they set up to cross the river to draw Zhang Xuan back into pursuit.
