Chapter 8: Monsters Run Amok. [9]

Summary

In the Tang Dynasty, medical care was underdeveloped, and controlling diseases and plagues was a daunting task. When the plague spread to the outskirts of Chang'an City, the people's hearts were filled with anxiety and unrest. Shops closed, and incidents of theft and robbery became more frequent, triggering a series of chain reactions. The officials worked through the night to handle the crisis, but the plague continued to spread, and the people's fear and desperation grew. Li Su, a woman who had lived for two lifetimes, was under house arrest, and the entire village was confined to their homes. She was afraid of contracting smallpox and tried to recall a method she had heard about in her past life. A monk arrived in the village, claiming to have a solution to drive away the plague, and the villagers gathered to worship the Bodhisattva. Li Su was skeptical but willing to try anything to save their village. The monk handed out small bags to the villagers, instructing them to sprinkle the contents around their homes. Li Su took a bag, feeling a sense of unease, but hoping that the monk's method would work. As she walked back home with her father, Li Dao Zheng, she couldn't help but think about the plague and the monk's intentions. The villagers, including the Wang brothers, knelt in the courtyard, praying to the Buddha. Li Su's heart ached as she watched them, and she wondered if the monk's method would be effective in driving away the plague. The situation was dire, and the villagers were desperate for a solution.
