Chapter 7: Heaven-sent Calamity. [8]
Summary
In a village, a respected elder publicly scolded and slapped the Wang Family brothers, Wang Zhuang and Wang Zhi, for not checking on their ill brother. The elder then told them that their brother had contracted smallpox. The villagers were terrified and retreated, with some old women wailing. The elder explained that the brother had been infected after visiting relatives in Ox Head Village, where over 20 people had contracted smallpox. The Wang Family brothers were desperate to see their family, but were restrained and eventually bound by the villagers to prevent them from entering their house. The head of the Wang Family, from within the house, told his sons to stay away and take care of themselves, and that the villagers would help them in the future. The elder, Grandfather Zhao, promised that the villagers would remember the Wang Family's kindness and would help the brothers in the future. The villagers were ordered to stay in their homes, and guards were assigned to watch the Wang Family's house. The news of the plague spread quickly to five villages in Jingyang County, and the county magistrate and the imperial court responded by dispatching doctors and sealing off the villages.Full content
