Chapter 332: Encircled by a Pack of Wolves. [339]

Summary

Li Su, a young and ambitious commander, arrives at the western state to hold office, but his youthful appearance and inexperience make him seem out of place. He meets Cao Yu, the governor, who praises Li Su's reputation and accomplishments, making him feel dizzy and humbled. However, Li Su is on high alert, suspecting that Cao Yu's sudden outburst could be a signal for an attack. Luckily, Cao Yu orders a feast instead, but the food and wine are unappetizing, and Li Su is forced to engage in small talk. After half an hour, Li Su asks about the situation in Xizhou, and Cao Yu reveals that the region is surrounded by hostile neighboring countries, including the Turks, Khotan, and Gaochang, who are disguising themselves as bandits and posing a threat to the western state. Li Su is concerned about the military strength and defense of the region, particularly the weak earthen walls that couldn't stop a determined foe.
