Chapter 333: The Bitter Hardship of Border Defense. [340]
Summary
Li Su received the imperial decree from Li Shi Min in Chang'an to take office in Western State. He envisioned the appearance of Western State as desolate and backward but was shocked by its actual state. The city wall of Western State was in a poor condition, and the military strength and combat power were limited, with only two Fang Yuan prefectures, each with a staff of 1,200 people. Cao Yu, the Governor of Western Prefecture, expressed his concerns about the danger Western Prefecture faced, with neighboring countries watching with covetous intentions and the imperial court neglecting its needs. Li Su, unsure of his role in Western State, was hesitant to ask about his official duties. Cao Yu had submitted numerous memorials to the imperial court requesting funds, grains, and troops but received no response. Li Su, feeling isolated, wondered if Li Shi Min was trying to get him killed. Upon returning to his camp, he was greeted by Xu Ming Zhu, who had been taking care of him, and felt a pang of tenderness in his heart. Li Su was making an effort to make room in his heart for Xu Ming Zhu, but deep down, he still had feelings for Dong Yang.Full content
