Chapter 29: The Jade Hairpin Incident. [32]

Summary

Zhang Xuan feels nervous as Empress Xiao reprimands him for allowing the princess to interact with commoners, which is a serious offense. He defends the princess, stating she is just a child wanting freedom and happiness. After reporting the details of the shopping trip, Empress Xiao decides not to punish him this time but warns him against future occurrences. Days later, Zhang Xuan is summoned by a palace eunuch, Chen Zhi Yong, who presents an imperial edict promoting him for his loyalty and bravery, surprising everyone. He receives rewards, including gold and gifts from the princess. As he opens a box given by the princess, he finds his military dagger and a jade hairpin, which he discreetly stashes away as the Yan Wang arrives. Chen Zhi Yong, curious about the contents, inspects the hairpin but is puzzled by the princess's gesture. The chapter ends with Yang Tan entering the hall, concerned about the situation.
