Chapter 221: Breaking It Down. [224]

Summary

Wei Yun Qi correctly assessed that the bandit army, led by An Shou Xi, was exhausted after a long march and unprepared for an attack on Yidu County. An Shou Xi hesitated to act due to a lack of intelligence about the enemy's strength and chose to rest his troops overnight. The next day, he sent Guo Song with a vanguard of 1,000 soldiers to scout ahead. Guo Song, a brutal thug, was eager for plunder and led his men towards Yidu County. They discovered a road littered with valuable coins and jewels, which distracted them from their mission. As the bandits fought over the treasure, they were ambushed by 500 Sui soldiers, resulting in heavy casualties for the bandits, including Guo Song's death. Wei Yun Qi orchestrated the ambush using the wealth he had retrieved to lure the bandits into disarray. Meanwhile, An Shou Xi and his main force, unaware of the ambush, were motivated by promises of wealth and women. However, upon learning of the vanguard's defeat, An Shou Xi faced panic and uncertainty, ultimately deciding to send scouts to assess the enemy's strength before proceeding.
