Chapter 983: Battle of Taiyuan (24). [987]

Summary

Du Huan, experienced in politics, strategizes to persuade the four prominent families of Yulin County to convince their soldiers to surrender to the Sui army, as he believes this will weaken Qin Hong Wu's position. Meng Shou Yi, connected to the Chen family, agrees to help and seeks support from his father-in-law and the other families. Meanwhile, Qin Hong Wu anxiously awaits orders from his lord, knowing his troops are outnumbered and the city defenses are weak. As the Sui army prepares to attack, Qin Hong Wu's trusted generals are late, and chaos ensues when he learns that two of his own generals have surrendered the city to the enemy. Forced to retreat, Qin Hong Wu and his remaining soldiers are ambushed by the Sui army outside the city. Realizing his defeat, he surrenders, leading to the Sui army's easy capture of Yulin County. Li Jing, the Sui commander, appoints Du Huan and Meng Shou Yi to govern the area. Meanwhile, the Turkic army, pursued by the Sui-Tang coalition, faces dire straits as they attempt to retreat but are cut off by the Sui navy. Chuluo Khan decides to fight rather than retreat, while Zhang Xuan of the Sui army prepares his defenses, confident in his strategy to wear down the enemy before engaging in battle.
