Summary

The Jin soldiers established a strict perimeter around Taiyuan City, deploying 3,000 cavalry for patrolling. A convoy of 200 ox-drawn carts carrying fodder, escorted by 200 Han soldiers, stopped to rest in a grove after a long journey. The drivers, conscripted commoners, discussed the war's impact on their lives, recalling past victories against the Jin army. Meanwhile, 50 Song army scouts, led by Wu Hai Ling, ambushed the convoy, swiftly killing half of the Han soldiers while they slept. The remaining soldiers panicked but were quickly overwhelmed. After the massacre, Wu Hai Ling approached the terrified drivers, promising to help them regain their freedom. They captured the enemy leader, who attempted to escape, and Wu Hai Ling ordered him to be interrogated. The Song army then disguised themselves as Han soldiers and continued escorting the fodder convoy toward Taiyuan City.
