Chapter 837: No Bloodshed in Battle. [840]

Summary

In the afternoon, Sui soldiers escorted a prison cart claiming to have captured their Great King, Meng Hai Gong. Meng Xing, suspecting it was an imposter, shot an arrow at the cart, causing doubt among the soldiers. Despite the Sui army's advance, Meng Xing refused to consider surrender, enforcing strict orders against it. Meanwhile, Yang Zhi Fu, stationed in Kuaiji City, secretly communicated with Sui scouts while pretending to be loyal. That night, he received a wax seal from Qi Wang Zhang Xuan, prompting him to prepare a secret plan. Meng Xing, focused on maintaining control and instilling fear, executed soldiers who spread rumors about Meng Hai Gong. The next morning, Meng Xing learned of a tunnel beneath the city, potentially dug by the Sui army. Upon investigating, he discovered a stone chamber filled with decayed copper coins and heavy locked boxes, possibly treasures from a previous ruler. Driven by greed, Meng Xing descended into the pit, where Yang Zhi Fu executed a cunning plan to collapse the tunnel, burying Meng Xing and his loyal soldiers alive. With Meng Xing out of the way, Yang Zhi Fu quickly rallied his troops to seize the west gate, leading to the Sui army's unopposed entry into Kuaiji County.
