Chapter 78: Benefiting Others at One's Own Expense. [79]
Summary
Li Su met Cheng Chu in Taiping Village, where Cheng apologized for destroying his shop and leaking the secret formula for book printing. Cheng offered compensation, but Li Su declined, suggesting instead that Cheng's family divide their winery into seven parts for him and three parts for them. Li Su and Cheng discussed the possibility of investigating the source of the leaked formula, suspecting that a sixth-grade official, Feng Yi Lang Sun, was involved. The story then shifted to Li Su's financial struggles, as he calculated his accounts and found himself in debt. His friend Dong Yang discovered Li Su's plan to contribute his movable type printing technique to the imperial court for free. Li Su explained the significance of his invention, which could mass-produce books and make knowledge accessible to everyone. Dong Yang was amazed and questioned Li Su's motives, wondering why he would give away such a valuable invention.Full content
