Judgment of Dayu.
Chapter 70: "Hong Shan's Dilemma, Sanmiao's Schemes". [72]
Summary
Dayu and Xia Qi's decision was validated when an envoy from the Sanmiao tribe arrived at the Hong Shan tribe just as Dongyue was leaving. The envoy, a high-ranking official and younger brother of the Sanmiao great lord, sought to persuade Hong Shan to oppose the court. The great lord of Hong Shan faced a dilemma: receiving the envoy could be seen as treason, but refusing him could offend Sanmiao, which was too powerful to antagonize. After consulting with the elder in charge of hospitality, they decided to host the envoy discreetly while gathering intelligence on the court's military. Reports indicated that the Sanmiao and Gong Gong tribes were evenly matched against the court's forces, which were struggling with low supplies. The great lord of Hong Shan ultimately chose to meet with the envoy to understand Sanmiao's intentions better. The envoy proposed a marriage alliance to unite against the court, but the great lord was cautious, recognizing the risks involved in opposing the court without a secret edict from Yi Di. He neither accepted nor rejected the proposal, stating that further deliberation was needed before making a decision.Full content
