Chapter 685: Special Weapon. [689]

Summary

As night fell, Lai Hu Er's soldiers began a covert operation to attack Beishe City using toxic smoke from burning branches coated with arsenic. Inspired by a letter from his nephew, Lai Jin Sheng, who had previously devised a siege tactic, Lai Hu Er organized the soldiers to create a smoke screen that would incapacitate the Goguryeo defenders. As the smoke spread, chaos ensued among the Goguryeo soldiers, causing them to cough violently and retreat. Taking advantage of the confusion, General Zhou Meng led the Sui soldiers in a surprise attack, scaling the city walls and engaging the enemy. Despite the toxic smoke affecting his own troops, Zhou Meng successfully opened the city gate, allowing hundreds of Sui soldiers to pour into the city. However, the Goguryeo defenders regrouped, launching a counterattack with arrows and rolling logs, leading to a stalemate as both sides prepared for the next phase of battle.
