Chapter 656: The Exorbitant Toll [656]

Summary

Wang Ning Xuan and his brother, Wang Ning An, discuss the dire situation of the Kingdom of Yutian and the need to protect it. Wang Ning Xuan recalls the bravery of the Da family from the Kingdom of Bohai, but Wang Ning An reveals that the story of Bohai is fabricated, leading to a shocking realization for Wang Ning Xuan. As they talk, Wang Ning Xuan admits to having made a private vow to the princess of Yutian, Wei Chi Yan, prompting Wang Ning An to promise to deploy troops for her rescue. Despite Wang Ning An's initial enthusiasm, he soon realizes the challenges of rescuing Yutian, which has been devastated and is surrounded by hostile territories. The brothers discuss the geographical difficulties and the dwindling numbers of Yutian's soldiers, as well as the threat from the Karakhanid state. They conclude that mobilizing troops through the Hexi Corridor is necessary, despite it being Western Xia territory. Meanwhile, Zhao Li, recovering from injuries, gets lost in the bustling city of Qinzhou. He encounters Zhao Zong Hou and learns about the plight of Yutian. Moved by the news of the dwindling Yutian warriors, Zhao Li urges for immediate military action, and Gou Ya Er promises that an army of twenty thousand will be dispatched, albeit at a steep cost of 5 million guan.
