Chapter 64: "Winds and Clouds of the East: Grain Disputes and Breaking the Mountains and Rivers". [66]

Summary

The chapter describes the urgent mobilization of the Yanzhou and Xu Zhou garrisons in response to imperial army orders, facing numerous hardships and casualties. The Xu Zhou troops, commanded by their garrison leader, march toward the border of the Shang Zu and Guandou tribes. The Guandou tribe, aware of the imperial troops' intentions, plans to disrupt their advance and set an ambush. As the Xu Zhou troops struggle with food shortages and harassment from local tribal guards, they regroup into formations to minimize disturbances. The garrison commander decides to attack a nearby tribe for provisions but is ambushed, resulting in heavy losses. Despite capturing the stronghold and securing supplies, the imperial army suffers significant casualties. As they approach the Shang Zu territory, the Guandou tribe prepares a trap in a mountainous area. The Xu Zhou commander organizes a defensive strategy but realizes the need for a breakthrough due to fatigue among his troops. Ultimately, he opts for a frontal assault to escape the encirclement and enter Shang Zu territory.
