Chapter 601: Details Determine Victory. [605]

Summary

Over five hundred Sui army grain ships were docked on the Yongji Canal, with a small number of soldiers patrolling. Jiang Li Ming, leading a group of cavalry in ambush, noticed a gap in the patrols and ordered his men to charge. As they approached the ships, a sudden volley of arrows from the Sui soldiers caused chaos among the Bohai cavalry, resulting in heavy casualties. In the ensuing confusion, Jiang Li Ming attempted to escape but encountered Pei Xingyan, who captured him instead of killing him. After the ambush, the Sui cavalry, led by Li Jing and Pei Xingyan, advanced towards Hejian County. Jiang Li Ming, under duress, deceived the city’s defenses into opening the gates for his injured men, only to reveal the Sui cavalry waiting outside. Pei Xingyan killed the city commander and led the Sui forces into Hejian County, where they swiftly captured the city. Li Jing, having orchestrated the ambush, discovered a significant grain supply in the granary of Hejian County. He learned from the granary steward that the Bohai army was low on supplies and would soon need more grain. Li Jing reported this intelligence to Zhang Xuan, advising him to wait for the Bohai army's supplies to run out, ensuring victory without further conflict.
