Chapter 598: Slaying the First Warrior [598]

Summary

The battle of Xizhou has entered its tenth day, with half of the city already fallen. Wang Shao's forces are struggling to hold on, but the city's design for brutal battles is taking its toll. The Qing Tang soldiers, led by Dong Zhan, are using fire oil and gunpowder to try and breach the city walls. Dong Zhan orders the diversion of the Tao River, flooding the city and turning the roads into a vast ocean. However, the city's use of cement as a building material makes it resistant to flooding. The cold weather and rushing water will eventually freeze, setting the stage for a decisive battle. Wang Shao rallies his troops, preparing for a strict formation to face the Qing Tang army. Dong Zhan, meanwhile, offers a hefty reward to anyone who can kill Wang Shao and capture Xizhou. The unpredictable late autumn weather shifts dramatically, with a biting cold wind and heavy snowfall. The Tao River freezes, and the Qing Tang soldiers launch another attack. Cao Yi leads the battle at Renyi Fang, where the Qing Tang soldiers use a massive siege tower to try and breach the city gate. Cao Hu, Cao Yi's loyal servant, makes a heroic sacrifice to destroy the siege tower. Dong Zhan is frightened by the Song soldiers' determination and realizes that continuing to clash with them is not worth the cost. He decides to retreat, but not before learning that reinforcements from the Song Dynasty are approaching. The Wang family army, led by Wang Ning Hong, Wang Ning Xuan, and Wang Ning Ze, crosses the Tao River on the ice and launches a surprise attack on the Qing Tang forces. Dong Zhan's plans are disrupted, and he is forced to send a ten-thousand-strong unit to block the reinforcements. Mu Mu Er, a giant warrior and Dong Zhan's trump card, is sent to block the Wang family army. However, he is gravely injured by grenades and eventually killed by a dense rain of arrows. The Wang family army charges forward, and Dong Zhan's situation becomes increasingly dire.
