Summary

In Yanjing City, also known as Xijin City, Tong Guan leads his army of 50,000 troops through the treacherous terrain towards Xijin Prefecture. Despite the soldiers' exhaustion, Tong Guan pushes them to march faster, eager to become the first foreign surname king of the Great Song Dynasty. After a brief rest, they encounter a fork in the road and consult a woodcutter, who advises taking the southern route, which is 50 li closer to their destination. As they progress through the rugged southern path, they face difficulties and doubts about their route. Eventually, they enter the Marching Gorge, where the woodcutter goes missing, leading to an ambush by enemy forces with firearms and crossbows, causing chaos among Tong Guan's troops. Meanwhile, Zhong Shi Zhong and Li Yan Qing, commanding 30,000 troops, arrive at Liangxiang County, the last stronghold before Xijin City. They decide to build a camp instead of advancing, waiting for negotiations between Song and Liao to conclude. Li Yan Qing sends scouts to gather intelligence, and one scout, Yan Qing, climbs a tree to survey the area, discovering that the county town is empty and likely not fortified with a large army.
