Chapter 490: Trampling the Old Fox [490]

Summary

Yeli Yuqi, a once proud Confucian general, finds himself in captivity under the Song dynasty, refusing to consume their grain and instead surviving on wild fruits and small game. His isolation leads him to reflect on past battles and the conflicts between Song and Liao. The arrival of Di Qing disrupts his monotonous life, and Yeli Yuqi realizes he is being used as a pawn by the Song. Despite contemplating suicide, he hesitates when confronted by Wang Ning An, who challenges his pride and motivations. Yeli Yuqi attempts to maintain his dignity through cooking and hospitality, but Wang Ning An criticizes him for pretending to be content while living in hardship. They discuss the changing political landscape, revealing that Li Yuanhao, the former leader of Western Xia, is dead, and Yeli Yuqi's hopes for freedom are dashed when he learns that his nephew has also died. Wang Ning An informs him that Western Xia is vulnerable and that the Song dynasty plans to strike. Ultimately, he reveals that Yeli Yuqi is being considered as a candidate to deal with Qing Tang, leaving Yeli Yuqi in shock.
