Chapter 49: Discovering Secrets. [52]

Summary

Kogoro waits outside while Chai Shao discusses private matters with his father-in-law, Li Yuan, the governor of Taiyuan. Li Yuan, known for his good reputation, faces challenges due to the recent rebellion led by Yang Xuan Gan, causing divisions among influential families in Wuchuan Prefecture. Chai Shao informs Li Yuan about the dissatisfaction of the Yuan family, particularly regarding the death of Yuan Hong Si, which Li Yuan suppressed. Li Yuan expresses frustration over the Yuan family's selfishness and the internal struggles within Wuchuan Prefecture. He inquires about Kogoro's background, revealing uncertainty about his origins. The conversation shifts to the need for supplies from the Turks, and Li Yuan decides to send his second uncle, Shen Tong, with Chai Shao. Li Yuan also expresses concern for his son Jian Cheng, who is impersonating Li Mi in the Wagang Army, fearing that this could become a problem. As they discuss the political tensions, Li Yuan reveals that he has tarnished his reputation to gain Yang Guang's trust, who is suspicious of the Guanzhong aristocracy. Kogoro, meanwhile, encounters Wang Bodang's son, who inadvertently reveals that Jian Cheng may have replaced Li Mi. Chai Shao introduces Kogoro to Li Yuan, who is impressed by Kogoro's reputation and considers him a potential ally. Li Yuan suggests his brother accompany Kogoro and Chai Shao north, hinting at his interest in the supplies from the Turks.
