Summary

Cheng Yaojin, a notorious rogue from Donghe County, faced shame after a failed militia mission against bandits, leading him to seek refuge with Shan Xiongxin, who had already joined the Wagang Army. Struggling for survival, he resorted to robbing travelers until he encountered Zhang Xuan, who exposed his intentions. Despite his gambling losses, Cheng Yaojin accepted defeat but was forced to accompany Zhang Xuan north. They reached Taiyuan City, a strategically important location, where Li Yuan had been appointed commander. As they entered the city, they witnessed the oppressive behavior of Li Yuan's steward, who forcibly seized property, leading to public outrage. Cheng Yaojin, feeling idle, wandered off while Zhang Xuan met with Chai Shao to introduce him to Li Yuan, amidst a scene of wealthy merchants bribing the commander for favors.
