Summary

The chapter describes a catastrophic night for the 5,500 Liangshan soldiers and the residents of Xian County, marked by five explosive blasts that decimate the city walls and kill over 300 soldiers. Zhang Cen and Guan Sheng assess the damage and decide to retreat to Bo Prefecture by dawn due to shattered morale and the city's irreparable state. As the Liangshan army departs, chaos ensues in the city as residents flee in fear. Meanwhile, Li Yan Qing leads 2,000 troops into the county, orders the burning of supplies, and plans to destroy enemy boats to prevent Liangshan's return. The Liangshan soldiers, after facing closed gates at Liaocheng and heavy casualties from ambushes, are forced to pillage for supplies to survive the journey to Gaotang County. As they march northward, they decide to raid Xingli Town, which is densely populated. Upon arrival, they wreak havoc, looting and causing despair among the villagers. However, a cavalry unit suddenly appears, turning the tide against the Liangshan soldiers, who are forced to flee in panic, abandoning their plunder as they become the targets of the vengeful villagers and cavalry.
