Chapter 404: The Two Armies Face Off. [408]

Summary

The Liangshan army, now reduced to about 5,000 men under generals Zhang Cen and Guan Sheng, faces low morale after a recent ambush by government troops. Guan Sheng, heavily affected by the defeat, drowns his sorrows in alcohol, fearing the capabilities of the enemy, particularly the cunning Li Yan Qing. Despite Zhang Cen's attempts to reassure him, Guan Sheng reflects on his regrets about joining the Liangshan bandits too early and realizes he has cut off his own future. A soldier interrupts their conversation to inform Zhang Cen of an urgent situation outside the city. They discover a severed head, identified as Commander Yang Xiong's, raising concerns about the fate of his troops. Zhang Cen orders strict secrecy regarding the matter and decides to send a message to Song Jiang. Meanwhile, Song Jiang learns of Yang Xiong's death and discusses strategies with Wu Yong, concluding that they must hold their ground in Xinxian despite dwindling numbers. They plan to reinforce their troops and recall Guan Sheng. In the imperial court, preparations for a campaign against the Liangshan army are underway, with Zhong Shi Dao reporting successful military training and logistics. News of recent victories against the Liangshan forces, including the death of Yang Xiong, boosts morale in the court. Crown Prince Zhao Huan advocates for rewards for Li Yan Qing, prompting the emperor to demand accountability for unreported military achievements.
