Chapter 39: Drawing Lots. [38]

Summary

The Emperor of the Great Wei summoned his nine sons to discuss the imperial examination, where princes could accompany the process. While most expected the Crown Prince to be chosen, the Emperor decided to draw lots instead, frustrating the other princes. Unexpectedly, the Eighth Prince, Zhao Hong Run, questioned the fairness of the drawing method, suggesting a hidden box to ensure impartiality. This box, secretly prepared by him, contained papers all bearing his name. As the Emperor complied, Zhao Hong Run manipulated the situation to his advantage, shaking the box to mix the papers, setting the stage for his selection as the accompanying prince.
