Summary

Zhang Chao returns to his impoverished village home, realizing his father's dire living conditions despite being a former officer. He discovers a backpack filled with modern items, which he contemplates trading for food but decides against exposing them in this era. As winter approaches, he plans to build a kang bed-stove for warmth. His father returns with some grain, and they prepare to make noodles, a rare luxury in their time.
