Summary

Zhang Chao explores Zhang Family Village on a winter morning after returning with Old Zhang. He wakes up in a simple cave dwelling and dons Old Zhang's clean but thin clothes. As he helps with wood chopping, he learns about the village's history and geography from Ke Wu, a skilled hunter. They fetch water from the Bathing Ditch, which will later be known as Whale Ditch. Zhang Chao discovers the village's connection to the Tang Dynasty and the allocation of land to government soldiers, realizing the challenges of land scarcity in the capital region. Ke Wu's family received 18 mu of land, highlighting the differences in land distribution compared to broader countryside allocations.
