Summary

In the Great Song Dynasty, local administrative divisions are categorized into "road," "fu," "zhou," "jun," and "jian." Fu are traditional political and economic centers, while zhou and jun are distinguished by strategic importance, with jun being crucial military locations. Li Yan Qing is appointed as the jiedushi zhi shi of Baojing Jun, a nominal title with little real power, but it serves a strategic purpose under the powerful Commander Zhong Shi Dao. Upon arriving in Taiyuan, Li Yan Qing encounters soldiers who question him due to rising tensions from military preparations. He meets Zhong Shi Dao, who is pleased to have a talented civil official like Li Yan Qing on his team. As they discuss their roles, Li Yan Qing learns about the military's dynamics and the significance of connections in the Northwest Army. He is given a private courtyard as accommodation but expresses a preference for living in a tent, reflecting his desire for a simpler, more rugged lifestyle.
