Chapter 29: "The Emperor's Chessboard: The Struggle of the Summer Officials". [31]
Summary
Qi, the Grand Minister of Heaven, temporarily held the vacant Summer Official position while Emperor Yi struggled with limited power due to Dayu's influence. To strengthen his authority, Yi's advisor proposed appointing the Ji clan chieftain as the Summer Official, but this required court approval and Dayu's consent. The three dukes remained silent, recognizing Yi's intentions. Taibao of the Zhen clan advised Qi to oppose the proposal during the court discussion, which he did, citing the Ji clan chieftain's poor management and recent tribal unrest. Despite Yi's inner court officials supporting the Ji clan, the opposition was too strong, leading to the proposal's failure. Disheartened, Yi dismissed Qi's loyal officials, revealing his frustration and further raising suspicions from Dayu and his son. Meanwhile, the Sanmiao tribe, seeking to restore their military power and retaliate against Dayu and Qi, uncovered a conspiracy against their leaders, intensifying their resolve to act independently and recruit warriors for a potential uprising.Full content
