Chapter 28: Examining Knowledge. [27]

Summary

The usually gentle Shen Ming Jun surprisingly spoke back to his mother Li Shi, something she never expected. Li Shi left the room in tears, saddened by the family's decline and her desire for her descendants to have a good education and future. Shen Xi and his sister Lin Dai overheard the argument and hid in the storage room. Shen Ming Xin urged Li Shi to give Shen Xi a chance to prove his ability by having the teacher assess him and Shen Yuan's knowledge. If Shen Xi failed, he would have to give up studying. Li Shi agreed, and they visited the teacher Su Yun Zhong, who asked the boys to recite from the Analects. Shen Yuan recited several sections fluently, while Shen Xi struggled, confirming Li Shi's doubts about his suitability for formal education.
