Chapter 279: Imperial Decree of Arranged Marriage. [286]
Summary
The Li Family hosted a grand banquet to celebrate Li Su's coming-of-age ceremony, attended by prominent military leaders including General Niu Jin Da and General Cheng Yaojin. The guests were amazed by the variety of delicacies served, as stir-frying was a rare cooking technique at that time. However, the Li Family deliberately did not serve Li Su's specialty wine to avoid trouble. As the feast progressed, Li Su observed the guests, particularly Hou Junji, whose refined table manners and occasional glances at Li Su sparked his interest. The celebration was interrupted by the arrival of the imperial edict, which announced Li Su's marriage to a woman he had never met. Li Su felt resentful, but Cheng Yaojin reminded him that he was lucky to have been spared by the emperor after deceiving him. Li Su realized that the emperor had deliberately arranged the marriage to bind his emotions and prevent him from pursuing his former lover, Dong Yang. The imperial edict also granted Li Su a hundred taels of gold, a thousand bolts of silk, and a horse to ride in Chang'an City. Li Su sarcastically commented on the emperor's generosity, which angered Cheng Yaojin. In the end, Li Su reluctantly accepted his fate and agreed to obey the edict and marry the woman chosen for him.Full content
