Chapter 22: Village School Cold and Quiet. [23]

Summary

Li Su attended the village school, where he found it to be deserted, with less than ten students. The teacher, Guo Yu, was a kind and amiable person who welcomed the children. Li Su met Wang Zhuang, a student who was forced to attend school by his father after a fight with his brother. Wang Zhuang's family was poor, and they couldn't afford to send a child to school, so his father chose him. Li Su and Wang Zhuang became acquainted, and Li Su learned about the difficulties of poor families in sending their children to school. The lesson began with recognizing characters, which Li Su found necessary to learn in order to blend in with the local culture. The teaching content was dry, and Li Su found himself dozing off during the lesson. Wang Zhuang's performance was even worse, and he was harshly woken up by Mr. Guo. After the lesson, Wang Zhuang asked Li Su to help him beat someone up, but Li Su declined.
