Chapter 18: Encountering the Hute People. [114]

Summary

The narrative unfolds as a group encounters two frightened shepherd boys while riding camels. Dou Ya Zai attempts to reassure them, and their guide, Old Zhang, gains their trust, leading the group to the Hu Te Ren tribe. The tribe lives in cave-like homes, and their customs differ from those of other tribes. A young translator, A Ji, who has attended school, becomes the group's link to the tribe. As they inquire about the tribe's conditions, A Ji reveals a stone carving's origin and mentions a "prince" in their tradition. The group expresses interest in a dangerous location, Black Water City, and A Ji is persuaded to help them in exchange for a new phone, leading to a playful negotiation.
