Summary

Li Wuji, a Khitan man from a long-established tribe in Yingzhou, faces a dramatic shift in his life after a devastating flood destroys his village. Forced to leave with his elderly mother, he struggles to survive in a world where even basic sustenance is scarce. Desperate, he turns to robbery with other village youths. After a second flood claims more lives, they flee to Cangzhou, where Li Wuji becomes intrigued by the tales of whale hunting. He encounters Wang Ning An, who coerces him into pretending to be a wealthy merchant. Despite his muscular build, Li Wuji must gain weight and refine his appearance to fit the role, enduring rigorous and humiliating transformations. Meanwhile, Xu Jie, a Liao merchant, faces his own crisis as the supply of Yaochi nectar dwindles due to a ban imposed by the Song Dynasty, threatening his wealth and business. Desperate, he decides to head to Cangzhou for a solution.
