Chapter 1216: The Battle of the Wasteful Disciples (Part 4). [1220]

Summary

In the afternoon, Li Jian Cheng was placed under house arrest in the Eastern Palace, where he faced interrogation by Pei Ji on the orders of Li Yuan. Despite being monitored and separated from his children, Li Jian Cheng remained indifferent, sharing a moment with his wife, Zheng, who expressed a desire for a simple life together. During Pei Ji's interrogation, Li Jian Cheng denied any involvement in an assassination plot against Li Yuan, sarcastically questioning the evidence against him. He warned Pei Ji about the consequences of corruption and suggested that if he were to take his own life out of guilt, it would be due to false hopes of ascending the throne. Pei Ji reported back to Li Yuan, who remained skeptical of his son's innocence but began to reconsider the logic behind the accusations. An eunuch's report confirmed some of Li Jian Cheng's claims, including his desire to renounce the crown prince title. This led Li Yuan to contemplate summoning ministers to discuss the situation further, indicating a shift in his stance towards his son.
