Chapter 1023: New Instructions. [1027]

Summary

The chapter describes the aftermath of the Tang Dynasty's decision to release the Bei Sui envoys after a period of house arrest. The Tang Dynasty shows a gesture of sincerity by allowing the envoys free movement and handing over the west gate of the guesthouse to the Sui army. Wen Yan Bo, feeling slighted by the treatment, refuses to meet Chen Shuda initially but acknowledges the necessity of a meeting. Ling Jing decides to explore Chang’an and meets with Gao Jin to discuss the recent military developments that led to the Tang's concession. They learn about the losses the Tang Dynasty faced in Diao Yin County, which prompted their change in attitude. The next day, Chen Shuda visits again, and the meeting proceeds with a focus on peace talks, but Wen Yan Bo clarifies that they can only discuss limited matters due to their rank. The chapter concludes with Chen Shuda agreeing to consult with the Emperor before continuing negotiations.
