Summary

Ma Da Niang sends Hong Qi and Shen Jiao to gather firewood while she packs the collected wood. The children, malnourished and around ten years old, show kindness to Shen Jiao, contrasting with her experiences in Hai Shi. Shen Jiao feels relief in the farm's simplicity and shares her candies with the children, who view them as a luxury. Hong Qi, respected among the group, divides the candies fairly, though Shi Tou tries to assert himself. A frail girl, Shi Tou's sister, expresses disinterest in candy but secretly desires it. After some teasing and a brief fight, the children return to their tasks, excitedly finding bird eggs and even a snake.
