Summary

Shen Jiao prepares to gather firewood, dressing modestly to avoid attention. She encounters an elderly woman, Ma, who admires her beauty and cleanliness, a rarity in their rural setting. Another elderly woman, Hu, suggests Shen Jiao could marry her grandson, Shi Tou, but Ma dismisses the idea, emphasizing their social differences.
