Summary

Liu Zi, the chief steward in Jiaozhou, spoils his only son, leading to the boy's recklessness and eventual illness. In a desperate attempt to save him, Liu kills a beloved mule at his son's request, but the son remains unimproved and dies, leaving Liu in mourning. Years later, the villagers encounter Liu Zi, who seems alive despite his death. His son, when informed of Liu's longing, agrees to meet but shows disdain for his father.
