Chapter 995: Cheng Hou's Decisive Battle (Part 1). [999]

Summary

Before dawn, forty thousand Turkic soldiers left their camp, motivated by Khan Chuluo's plan to return home, while eighty thousand Sui troops, led by Zhang Xuan, pursued them. The Sui army aimed to engage the Turkic forces in a decisive battle after suffering heavy casualties. The Turkic army, hindered by difficult terrain, made slow progress and set up camp for the night. Zhi Shili warned Chuluo Khan that the Sui army was close, suspecting they had intercepted plans. Meanwhile, Zhang Xuan's general, Sun Chang Le, proposed a nighttime raid to disrupt the Turkic camp, which Zhang approved. Sun led three thousand cavalry to harass the Turkic forces, successfully creating chaos and confusion among them. Despite the Turkic army's attempts to regroup, they faced multiple disturbances throughout the night, leading to panic and disarray. Chuluo Khan, overwhelmed by the turmoil, ordered his sentinels to refrain from reporting unless the main Sui force was sighted, and then succumbed to exhaustion.
