Chapter 990: Chang'an Turmoil (Part 3). [994]
Summary
Before ascending the throne, Pei Ji and Liu Wenjing were trusted by Li Yuan, but now Chen Shuda has gained his favor due to the former's closeness to the Crown Prince and the King of Qin. Li Yuan seeks advice from Chen Shuda regarding the Guanzhong nobles, whose tax-exempt status has led to a financial crisis for the court. The conflict dates back two years when the Crown Prince suggested revoking the nobles' privileges, but Li Yuan feared backlash. As tax revenues plummet, Chen Shuda suggests appealing to the nobles for financial support rather than imposing taxes, which would provoke resistance. Li Yuan contemplates the situation, and after receiving news of the Prince of Yong'an's death, he decides to take action against the Guanzhong nobles. Meanwhile, Li Shimin learns of his uncle's betrayal and the emperor's intentions, realizing the gravity of the situation and the severed familial ties.Full content
