Summary

To demonstrate his impartiality, the court decided to showcase the emperor's demeanor to the people of the world on Dong Street in Luo Yang. Zhang Rong, a Confucian scholar, suggested that the empress spar with his students, but Sun Shang Xiang, the empress, instead proposed an archery competition with Zhang Rong's son, Zhang Xu. Zhang Xu hit the bullseye, but Sun Shang Xiang easily surpassed him, hitting the bullseye multiple times in quick succession. Zhang Rong then suggested discussing a difficult case to settle their dispute. The case involved two brothers who lived together, with their wives claiming to be pregnant, but only one child was born. The wives insisted the child was theirs, but the signs of childbirth were unclear. Lv Qi Ling, pretending to throw the child to the ground, prompted the wives to reveal the truth. One wife admitted the child was not hers, and the other wife was relieved. Lv Qi Ling then revealed that the child belonged to the latter wife.
