Chapter 931: The Court Reforms, The Emperor Relaxes [931]
Summary
Liu Bei, the emperor, and his son Liu Mang engage in a rare spectacle in history, where they argue over who should be the emperor. Liu Bei wants to abdicate the throne to Liu Mang, but the latter refuses, citing that he doesn't want to take over the mess of the newly stabilized Han dynasty. Liu Mang suggests that Liu Bei should hold on for a few years until the situation stabilizes before handing over the throne. Zhuge Liang, the Chancellor, intervenes and suggests that Liu Mang should ascend the throne, with Liu Bei promising not to interfere in state matters as the retired Emperor. Liu Mang eventually agrees, and Liu Bei quickly abdicates the throne. Upon ascending to the throne, Liu Mang changes the era name to Yan Xing and begins to implement reforms. He decides to lighten the emperor's load by reducing the number of memorials he has to review and simplifying the administrative system. He also changes the terminology of the Three Dukes and Nine Ministers to the Three Provinces and Six Ministries. Liu Mang summons Zhuge Liang and other officials to discuss matters, but his unconventional approach and priorities, such as requesting a cushion for the dragon throne, leave them puzzled. Despite this, they follow his lead, and the chapter ends with Liu Mang preparing to discuss his reforms over a meal.Full content
