Chapter 914: Reaching a Compromise (Part 1). [918]

Summary

After the assassination incident, Northern Sui halted negotiations, with Pei Ju demanding an explanation and concessions from the Tang Dynasty. Crown Prince Li Jian Cheng formally apologized and presented a personal letter from his father. The Tang Dynasty dismissed officials responsible for the oversight that led to the assassination and expressed regret. Pei Ju acknowledged their sincerity but sought further concessions, proposing safe passage for Tang cargo ships in exchange for the evacuation of Taiyuan County's population. Li Jian Cheng deferred the decision for further discussion. In the imperial study, Li Yuan criticized the Northern Sui's demands but recognized the need for continued negotiations. They devised a strategy to negotiate the return of territories and ensure voluntary migration for the population. The next day, negotiations resumed, with both sides discussing terms. The Tang Dynasty sought the return of Shangdang and Changping Counties, while Pei Ju rejected this but agreed to ensure safe passage for Tang ships. Eventually, a compromise was reached regarding territorial exchanges and migration rights.
