Summary

The narrative describes a tense nighttime scene where a woman, known as Watermelon and the Marshal of the Twenty-Ninth Army, rides through the Chengdu Plain. After noticing something amiss, she dismounts and encounters two young officers, Lin Qiu and Xu Shao Yuan, who are wary of her presence. Watermelon insists on seeing her husband, Li Heng, despite their concerns. They navigate through the woods to a small settlement where Watermelon meets Ning Yi, who informs her of a complex situation involving political tensions and a scholar named Li Xi Ming, who has been implicated in a plot against the forces of China. Ning Yi questions Li Xi Ming about his role in the upheaval and the ideals of equality and democracy he has been associated with.
