Summary

In March, after a rain, a character reflects on his grandfather, a serious scholar who valued knowledge and family. During an attack by the Liao people, the narrator recalls his childhood fear and his grandfather's sacrifice, setting fire to their home to protect the family. The narrator, who grew up in a female-dominated household, became fierce and vengeful, seeking power and respect. He reminisces about his family while preparing for battle against the Jurchens, expressing pride in his heritage and a desire for revenge. As the siege of Daming Prefecture intensifies, the Jurchen forces, led by Wan Yan Chang, begin to overpower the defenders. Despite the odds, the narrator and his remaining troops prepare to fight fiercely, embodying tragic heroism. Meanwhile, the Chinese army, having regrouped after a previous battle, is poised to assist but faces challenges of its own.
