Summary

Zhang Xuan decides not to attack the west gate, allowing Du Fuwei to retreat and weaken his resolve. Du Fuwei leads his loyal elite troops, the Shangmu Army, westward to seek refuge with Li Tang. After resting, Du Fuwei contemplates the dangers of resupplying nearby and decides to send his aide Zuo Xian You to Chang'an to gauge the Tang court's attitude. As they prepare to leave, they sense the approaching Sui cavalry. Du Fuwei commands his troops to prepare for battle, using the grove for cover. Pei Xingyan leads the Sui cavalry to surround the grove and sets it on fire, forcing Du Fuwei's troops to retreat. Kan Leng, a fierce general, attempts to hold off the cavalry but is killed by Luo Cheng, causing the Jianghuai soldiers to lose morale and flee.
