Summary

Ma Zheng anxiously awaited in a tent for nearly three hours, fearing for his life and the outcome of his mission to negotiate with the Jin soldiers. When summoned, he was taken to the main military tent where he faced Wanyan Xieye, the new Jin heir. Despite his fear, Ma Zheng maintained his composure and proposed a discussion to avoid casualties, which Wanyan Xieye initially dismissed. However, after some negotiation, they agreed to ceasefire discussions. Meanwhile, in the imperial study, Emperor Zhao Huan was caught between pro-war and pro-peace factions within his court, ultimately deciding to pursue negotiations for a dignified resolution to the conflict. After Ma Zheng's meeting, Wanyan Xieye and his advisor Liang Fang Ping strategized to ensure that any withdrawal from the Jin side would appear as a diplomatic victory for the pro-peace faction in the Song court.
