Summary

In the northwest during summer, a group of ragged refugees, including eight-year-old Zheng Hui Xin and her weary father Zheng Lao Cheng, gather under a solitary tree amidst vast wheat fields. Once a respected scholarly family, they faced ruin after the Xixia raided their city, losing most possessions but retaining some hidden supplies. After the death of Zheng Hui Xin's mother, they fled the city, encountering other refugees and witnessing the devastation left by the Xixia. As they journeyed, they faced despair over the impending famine, with crops thriving yet unattainable. One day, while resting, chaos erupted as Xixia soldiers attacked. Zheng Hui Xin's father was killed, and she was swept away by a middle-aged man named Qu Qing, who fought to protect her. They escaped down a steep slope, where Qu Qing was injured but managed to save her. They reached a valley called Xiaocanghe, bustling with military activity. Amidst the blockade by the Xixia and Jin, the valley occasionally received lost refugees and grain caravans, leading to a significant grain acquisition orchestrated by Ning Yi.
