Chapter 63: The Apricot Blossom Maiden [62]
Summary
Ma Xing Hua is a gentle and diligent woman who stitches shoe soles even while resting. She takes Shen Jiao outside to escape the heat of her mother's room. Shen Jiao hesitates but eventually whispers to Ma Xing Hua about her mother's health, suggesting that the strong medicinal smell in the room is harmful. Ma Xing Hua, convinced by Shen Jiao's words, opens a window, improving her mother's comfort. Ma Xing Hua's mother praises her daughter, and they share sweet potato chips. Shen Jiao brings warm meat pies for them, explaining that she didn't kill her rabbit but brought pork instead. She reveals that her family obtained a leg of a wild boar after witnessing a fight between wolves and the boar in a forbidden area. Ma Xing Hua scolds Shen Jiao for being in a dangerous place but feels reassured by the presence of her strong uncle. They discuss the meat, and Ma Xing Hua insists Shen Jiao should take some back, but Shen Jiao refuses, fearing others will notice. Ma Xing Hua realizes her words may sound greedy and corrects herself. Shen Jiao expresses her wish to bring back more meat, lamenting the loss of potential meals, while Ma Xing Hua warns her about the dangers of attracting wolves.Full content
