Summary

Yu Shi Ji, aware of the impending collapse of the Sui dynasty, sought to secure a future for his family and son, who had allied with Zhang Xuan. Recognizing his limited resources compared to other families, he realized he could offer Zhang Xuan the emperor's power. After being summoned by the ailing emperor Yang Guang, Yu Shi Ji proposed that instead of abdicating, Yang Guang should maintain his position to ensure stability and prevent Li Yuan from gaining power. He suggested cultivating a relationship with Zhang Xuan, who could counterbalance Li Yuan's ambitions. Yu Shi Ji argued that granting Zhang Xuan a princely title, specifically the title of King of Qi, would solidify his loyalty and help eliminate Li Yuan. Ultimately, Yang Guang agreed to this extraordinary measure to protect the Sui dynasty.
